Mark and Tammy Baker
Who?
Mark spent his junior/teen years in TBC, before joining Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in 1989 for his 6 month Discipleship Training School. As part of a team he helped start YWAM’s work on the island of Borneo where he stayed until 1995 when he and Tammy were married and the work closed down. The Bakers returned to Thornbury for 4 years, after which, together with their daughter Bethany, they were sent out by TBC to return to North Borneo and re-pioneer YWAM’s work. David was born a year later, and as a foursome they have sought to fulfil YWAM’s vision in Malaysia ever since.
What is YWAM?
YWAM is an international and inter-denominational organisation of people of all ages whose common purpose is ‘to Know God and Make Him Known’. This is done through Training, such as the 6-month Discipleship Training School, Mercy Ministry – following Jesus’ example of compassion to those in need, and Evangelism, using relevant ways to share the good news of God’s Kingdom with every person in society.
Where?
Country: Malaysia, home to 32 million people from multiple ethnicities and religions, of which Islam is the official religion.
Location: The island of Borneo, which is home to part of Malaysia, part of Indonesia and he nation of Brunei.
What?
The Bakers feel called to share the good news and disciple primarily those in their district (1.5 times the land mass of the UK), but also in both their neighbouring district and nations. This has been done through serving various programmes run in the local churches and organisation, running youth mission camps, short term courses in discipleship, leadership, Bible Study and sharing their faith.
